Fuqauy Varina was once called Fuquay Springs after a town was built around a mineral spring that had been discovered by the son of William Fuquay  on their own property. Later, a resident south of Fuquay Springs was sent letters while in the Military from a women who called herself "Varina". Ultimately the man married the woman behind the letters and moved her to his home. Eventually the man opened up businesses including a post office and named them after his wife "Varina".  In 1909 Fuquay Springs was incorporated and in 1964 they joined Varina to become the one town that we know of today. The population of Fuquay-Varina was approx 18,000 during the 2010 census and is estimated to be currently over 20,000.
